Background

During the Great Terror one place where the executed were buried in Izhevsk was the Severnoe (northern) Cemetery. Archival documents confirm that seven people were shot on the night of 3-4 September 1937 after being condemned to death by the NKVD troika of the Udmurt ASSR and buried in the Severnoe Cemetery.

Thanks to the efforts of the Udmurtian Association of the Victims of Political Repression a sculptural composition entitled “Grief” was installed in 1992. On the plinth of the monument are the words: “May the victims of political repression in the 1920s to 1950s never be forgotten”. The names of the seven people shot on 3-4 September 1937 are inscribed on a separate plaque.

Books of Remembrance

Two volumes of a Book of Remembrance for Udmurtia have been published (2001 & 2016), including biographical entries on 9,800 who were shot or sent to the camps.
